The SVHC Committee has been, like everyone else in these lockdown, or semi-lockdown days, frustrated at being unable to organise the usual races we have for members and the inability to offer a Race Series.

We’re going to change that though: -

We don’t know what the short to medium term future holds, what levels of Covid infections there are going to be and what restrictions on free movement and mingling will remain in place. Irrespective of that we’re planning a new type of race series between now and December this year. It’ll be about having a bit of competition, a bit of fun and, at the very least, a prize Christmas dinner at the end of it.

HERE ARE THE RULES: -

1. This will be a unisex series, based on age graded performances. Due to uncertainty, the normal male/female Race Series will be suspended again this year. Non-members are welcome to participate, but are not eligible for prizes. No charge.

2. There will be six races to complete the series in 2021. The best five results will count towards the final winner and placed athletes’ scores. Scores will be the cumulative best 5 age-graded scores for each athlete.

3. Self-declaration of times and distance will be accepted for virtual events (outright banditry may be subject to ridicule). In saying this about self-declaration of times and distance, if a sports watch or App is not used to measure distance competitors must use a known race route, or track to be sure of correct distance.

4. The first race will be a virtual 10k during the six days from Tuesday 23rd March to Sunday 28th March. That’s to commemorate one year since the first ‘lockdown’ happened in Scotland. The winner will be the person with the best age-graded performance.

5. If there are still race restrictions in place after that first race, the winner will decide what the next race in the series should be (only stipulation is that it must be capable of age graded measurement) and fix a date, within 6 weeks of Sunday 28th March, for that race to happen.

6. If Scotland-wide restrictions are lifted by that time, the next race in the Series will be May’s Snowball race at Drumpellier Park and scores will be counted in the normal way.

7. The timetable for races after May will be – June, August, September and December. Tentative events earmarked for this are; the Club’s 5k Road Race in Clydebank; a 51st Club Anniversary trail/hill race either in Fife or at Ardgartan; The XC International Trial at Tollcross Park in September; and, finally a Christmas Handicap, at a venue to be confirmed, in early December.

8. Should travel restrictions, etc., continue, or be re-imposed, during the period then we will revert to virtual formats, with race winners, alternating with last-place finishers deciding what the next race will be. No person shall nominate more than one race, so in the unlikely event of the same person being first or last, as the case may be, more than once then the decision will fall to the next placed finisher in that case.

9. There will be three main prizes: -

1st - £100 of Marks and Spencer’s vouchers

2nd- £60 of Marks and Spencer’s vouchers

3rd - £40 of Marks and Spencer’s vouchers

10. There will also be a prize of a £15 Marks and Spencer’s voucher for everyone, apart from the top 3, taking part in at least 5 of the races in the Series: that way, even if you have not proven to be a world beater, you’ll be able to get some decent potato croquettes and stuffing for the Christmas turkey!

For the first race and any other virtual race, please register beforehand with Ada at stewart2@ntlworld.com.

Runners taking part should simply record their time and: -

• Send it to Tony Martin at pbtiming@btinternet.com

• Within 24 hours of the race window (i.e. for the first 10k by midnight on Monday 29th March). Earlier is fine as the results will be updated on a regular basis.

• Put “Scottish Vets Age-Graded Race” in the title bar of your email, so Tony knows to look out for times coming in.

• Give your name, sex and age on race day.

• Confirm whether or not you are a member of SVHC.

Tony will work out your age-graded result from that and put a link to his website results page onto the SVHC Facebook Page and Website.

Good luck everyone.
