Fiona Matheson W60 3000m Indoor World Record

Fiona Matheson W60 3000m Indoor World Record

The W60 3000m indoor world record is back in British hands. Very well done to Fiona Matheson!!
Fiona’s Spanish friend and competitor Esther Pendrosa set the record at the start of the indoor season and then broke her own record.
Inspired by this, Fiona set a new record in Sheffield and then broke her own mark in Glasgow. Esther wasn’t finished for the season however and took the record back, by less than one second a week after Fiona!
There then ensued a bit of a scramble to try and find Fiona another 3000m indoors race with the required level of officials before the season ended. Arthur Kimber, President of BMAF and event director of the SCVAC ensured the necessary officials were at Lee Valley this weekend for record ratification, and today Fiona ran a magnificent solo race from gun to tape. Setting out on a 1500m schedule she kept going all the way and took just over 8 seconds from the record, finishing in 10:48.13.
A great story of friendly rivalry pushing both athletes on to great things.
